In times of peace, cultivate the arts. In times of war, wield the sword. Adapted from Japanese warrior culture. Deadly but charming, Nagoya Sansaburo was a powerful character known as the best spear wielder and the most handsome warrior. He was born in 15/72 or 15/76 and died by the hands of his colleague. Not only was Nagoya a samurai in the Sengoku and Edo period, but he was also an extremely handsome entertainer. A warrior and an entertainer are on opposite ends of the spectrum. However, Nagoya embodied both. As someone who has lived in US, China, and Japan, I have experienced many cultural differences because each different country had unique expectations for how I was supposed to act. Thus, I had to adapt to various cultures and their norms, similar to the ways Nagoya adapted to warfare and entertainment. Through this piece, I expressed the importance of both fitting in and standing out in a combined style of traditional and anime painting. By implementing these opposite art styles, they represent Nagoya's two sides.
